ABOUT THE PIECE:
Sarah Jones is s painter and sculptor whose work tells stories of growth and resilience. She runs a studio practice in Virginia called Sanaa Design Studios. Sarah has always been and remains to be an artist in constant pursuit of research, exploration and making an impact in the arts.
Her constant desire to learn took her to Cape Town, South Africa to participate in an artist residency program through Jan Ernst Studio in June-July 2024. Not only did Sarah sharpen her sculpting skills and learn a great deal about the arts industry, but she also completed this commissioned painting for the CCWP.
The highly inspirational environment brought about a painting that pushed boundaries and challenged Sarah’s usual artistic style.
“The background pattern in the painting depicts silhouettes of aloe plants and prickly pear cactus plants. I decided to draw inspiration from my time here in South Africa, and I thought it appropriate given the plants’ known resilience in dry, desolate climates. The aloe plant is also regarded for its highly medicinal properties. The doctor exudes confidence as she takes in the rhythm of the most powerful force in the universe. The bird of paradise plant depicted in the foreground is another member of the flora family that is common here, which is known to symbolize joyfulness, paradise, freedom, anticipation and excitement.
